Canadian Reading Recovery
Training Centers

Regional Institutes

As Reading Recovery expanded across Canada it became necessary to create regional Institutes to train and support teacher leaders, liaison administrators, and teachers. Under the umbrella of the Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery, the country has been divided into four regions: Eastern, Central, Western and Mountain-Pacific. Institutes presently are located in Halifax, Toronto, and Winnipeg, with future plans for an Institute in the Mountain Pacific Region.

Central Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery
The Central Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery oversees the work in Reading Recovery Teacher Professional Development Centres in school districts across the province of Ontario, and in the future, Quebec.

Reading Recovery is implemented in 15 English Boards of Education in Ontario:
Bruce Grey Catholic, Dufferin Peel Catholic, Durham Catholic, Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic, Near North, Niagara Catholic, Peel. Rainy River, Simcoe, Simcoe Muskoka Catholic, Thames Valley, Toronto, Upper Canada, York Catholic, and York Region.
Reading Recovery is also implemented in two Ontario French Boards of Education and overseen by the Eastern Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery.

The work of the Institute is the responsibility of the regional trainer. The trainer is responsible for administration of the Teacher Leader Certificate Course, the ongoing professional development of teacher leaders in the Central Region, and consultation with district administrators on the implementation of Reading Recovery in the Central Region.

The Eastern Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery
The Eastern Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is responsible for the training and support of teacher leaders in the four Atlantic provinces. It also oversees the implementation of Reading Recovery to Francophone and French immersion children in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, and Ontario.

A bilingual trainer facilitates the training of new teacher leaders for Canada. The trainer also provides ongoing professional development and consults with administrators in order to strengthen their implementations in pre-established boards in both official languages. Academic credits for teacher leader training are offered through Mount St. Vincent University, Halifax.

Western Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery
The Western Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and works with the cooperation of Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth. It provides training and support to Reading Recovery teacher leaders throughout Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, and the Yukon Territory. Academic credits for teacher leader training are offered through Brandon University.

Two trainers presently work with teacher leaders, providing guidance in implementation, teaching children, training teachers, and collecting and analyzing data throughout the region. Reading Recovery is implemented in English, but as work progresses, it is anticipated that it will also be offered in French.
