The
Reading Recovery Network in Canada
The Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery
The Reading Recovery network in Canada operates under the
Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery (CIRR) on three levels:
schools, districts, and regional divisions. The CIRR oversees and
supports the operations of Reading Recovery, including training and
supporting training, and upholding the Standards and Guidelines.
Four Regional Divisions
Four regional divisions oversee Reading Recovery across Canada:
the Atlantic Division in Halifax, Nova Scotia; the Central Division
in Toronto, Ontario; the Western Division in Winnipeg, Manitoba; and
the Mountain Pacific Division in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Each division is responsible for providing the year-long training of
teacher leaders, offering ongoing professional development to
teachers and teacher leaders, overseeing the work in teacher
training centres and schools and working with district
administrators in the analysis of data in order to strengthen
implementation.
History
First introduced in the provinces of Ontario and Nova Scotia in
1987, Reading Recovery quickly expanded across Canada and
is now
implemented in 7 of the 10 provinces and in the Yukon Territory.
French Development in Canada
In 1995, Marie Clay granted the province of Nova Scotia the
right to develop Reading Recovery training
materials in French.
Standards and Guidelines for Reading Recovery in Canada
Standards and Guidelines are essential to ensure the quality of
services and successful results for children and schools.
Data
More than 100,000 children have been served in Reading Recovery
in Canada. See the CIRR

Conferences
A National Reading Recovery/Early Literacy Conference is held
every other year in Toronto, Ontario.
Regional conferences are held
on the alternating year.
Marie M. Clay Canadian Memorial Fund
Canada has established a
Marie M. Clay Canadian Memorial Fund to help ensure CIRR’s
mission that any child who needs the support of Reading Recovery in
Canada will have access to it. Each year a dinner is held to honor
of the work of Marie Clay and to raise funds to support training and
research of Reading Recovery in Canada. Tax receipts will be issued
for any donation to this fund.
